7 Things Every Hunter Should Do Before September

Every year it happens.

The first cool morning shows up. Somebody mentions teal season. The group text starts buzzing. Suddenly everyone realizes duck season isn't nearly as far away as it felt back in May.

The problem is that most hunting headaches don't happen during the season.

They happen because something got ignored before the season.

A duck call that should have been retuned.

A trailer bearing that should have been replaced.

A dog that should have gotten more reps.

A blind that should have been cleaned out weeks ago.

The good news is there's still time.

Before September rolls around, here are seven things every waterfowl hunter should take care of.

1. Get Your Duck Calls Retuned

If you've been carrying the same call for years, chances are it could use some attention.

Reeds wear. Cork compresses. Moisture builds up. Performance changes little by little until one day the call doesn't sound quite like you remember.

Most hunters don't notice how much they've lost until they hear the call after a proper tune-up.

Summer is the perfect time to send calls in before hunting season traffic picks up.

While you're at it, it's also a good time to evaluate your lanyard and decide if there's a spot for something new this season.

2. Put Some Work Into Your Dog

A good retriever isn't built during hunting season.

The dogs making difficult retrieves in December are usually the ones that spent the summer training.

That doesn't mean every session has to be complicated.

Short obedience drills.

Simple marks.

Water work.

Steadiness.

Consistency matters more than marathon training sessions.

Even a few days a week can make a huge difference by opening day.

3. Organize Your Hunting Gear

Every duck hunter has at least one tote full of mystery equipment.

Old gloves.

Broken headlamps.

Loose choke tubes.

Three dozen zip ties.

A flashlight that hasn't worked since 2022.

Before the season starts, dump everything out.

Organize it.

Throw away what you don't need.

Replace what you do.

Your future self will thank you when you're packing for opening morning.

4. Replace Old Lanyards and Worn-Out Accessories

Hunters tend to hold onto gear forever.

Sometimes that's a good thing.

Sometimes it's how calls end up hanging from a cracked lanyard that's one bad snag away from ending up at the bottom of the marsh.

Inspect your lanyards, clips, swivels, straps, and other accessories now instead of discovering a failure during the season.

A few small upgrades today can save a lot of frustration later.

5. Start Scouting Water

The birds aren't here yet.

That doesn't mean scouting can't begin.

Summer is one of the best times to learn a marsh, reservoir, rice field, or public hunting area.

Pay attention to:

  • Water levels
  • Vegetation changes
  • Access routes
  • Boat launches
  • Areas that could hold birds once migration begins

The more familiar you are with a place before ducks arrive, the better your decisions will be once they do.

6. Prep Your Boat and Trailer

Nothing ruins an opening weekend faster than mechanical problems.

Check your trailer bearings.

Inspect lights and wiring.

Look over tires.

Replace fuel filters.

Test batteries.

Make sure navigation lights work.

Run the boat.

Then run it again.

The boat ramp is not the place to discover problems.

7. Clean and Prepare Your Blinds

Whether you hunt a permanent blind, temporary hide, pit blind, or marsh setup, now is the time to get it ready.

Trim vegetation.

Repair damaged sections.

Replace rotten boards.

Check fasteners.

Clear shooting lanes.

Make improvements while temperatures are warm and schedules are flexible.

Once the season arrives, you'll be glad it's already done.

September Comes Fast

Most hunters think preparation starts a few days before opening weekend.

The best hunters know it starts months earlier.

The work you put in now pays off when the weather changes, the first flights show up, and everyone else is scrambling to catch up.

Take care of the small things now.

September will be here before you know it.
